About

“Music is a waste of time.”

I remember saying that horrid sentence to a friend when I was about 12. Pop-music’s pull was too strong, though, and by the age of 14 I was immersed in Top 40 radio and well on the way to becoming a music buff. I like to think my late introduction to music fueled my obsession.

These days, as Arts & Entertainment Reporter at The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, music is my job. But more than that, it’s what keeps me sane in this workaday world. And it’s definitely not a waste of time.

This blog, “All the Songs We Never Heard Before” (a play on lyrics from one of my favorite Belle and Sebastian songs), will allow readers to get inside my head to find out about the music that’s moving me. I’ll write about the national music scene along with insight into what’s happening right here in Eastern Iowa.

I hope you enjoy it.

  1. Eric- I enjoy your contribution to the Gazette and critique of the local music scene.

Will you be reviewing the upcoming Steve Earle show at the Englert. I was glad to see that he’s coming to the area…and at an affordable ticket price.

  2. Great to see that good music is still given credit in Cedar Rapids. There is a lot of bad music out there. The ones who know otherwise will profit. Thanks for the heads up on Gaslight….I dig the sound.

  3. LOVE your site. Thank you so much for introducing me to some of my now favourite bands. Kudos.

  4. Hi Eric –

I just recently found this blog and I have used it as a source to find some great artists/music that I had not heard before.

It looks like you haven’t posted in a while. Will you be picking this back up and contributing again anytime soon?

    Thanks – Anthony

  5. Dearest Eric:

IT, AND ACTING ARE THE ONLY 2 THINGS ON THE PLANET
    THAT I FIND THERAPEUTIC.
